volunteer opportunity alert!
Want to make a difference in your neighborhood? Become a Precinct Captain!
You do NOT have to live or vote in a precinct in order to be a Captain there. It does help if you are geographically closer to the precinct, but it’s not necessary. A Precinct Captain’s main responsibility is getting volunteers to help with activities, which includes election day, but it’s so much more. It’s building a team that can run smoothly with your guidance. It’s extremely rewarding and uplifting, too!
We need Captains for the following precincts:

- Willow Springs (votes at the Willow Springs Elementary)

LAIDLER CAMPBELL IS FCDC 2023 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR!
Congratulations to our wonderful volunteer Laidler Campbell on being named Fairfax Democrats' Volunteer of the Year. Laidler is an indefatigable activist wrapped in the body of a genteel Southern belle. She volunteers at every election, greeting voters with her beautiful South Carolina accent and kind smile. No one would dare not to take a Democratic sample ballot from Laidler! She has taken shifts that others won’t fill and was recently seen manning the table alone in the cold and dark at West Springfield High, Springfield District’s largest and busiest precinct.
Helping others isn’t just a hobby for Laidler, she actually made a career out of it. A 1965 graduate of William and Mary, Laidler worked for over 30 years as a school psychologist in Fairfax County Public Schools, including a long stint at Luther Jackson Middle School. Since retiring, Laidler remains committed to issues affecting our schools. We have attended several meetings together in support of the Fairfax County School Board and their policies. Laidler always presents a quiet, dignified presence in sharp contrast to the belligerent protestors from the right.
Laidler also canvasses like a beast! Neither heat nor cold nor lack of bathrooms slows her down. She is especially fond of pounding the pavement for her favorite politician, Delegate Kathy Tran. Her energy and enthusiasm are an inspiration to those of us who wilt in the Virginia heat and humidity and shrink at the thought of knocking on a stranger's door.
Finally, Laidler is an active, long-time member of our West Springfield postcard group, Postcards & Politics. She has attended numerous writing parties, taken dozens of packets home, and happily written hundreds, even thousands of postcards over the years for our Virginia candidates. As she recently entered her ninth decade, she is showing no signs of slowing down.
Thank you, Laidler, for all you do!

VALERIE BROOKS NAMED SPRINGFIELD DEMS' MEMBER OF THE YEAR
When Springfield District's precincts were redistricted in 2021, luckily for us, we gained at least one great star in Valerie Brooks. Despite holding down two jobs AND going to school for yet another degree, Valerie runs Penderbrook precinct and it hums. She keeps in touch with her volunteers and shows true leadership. Every Election Day, every primary day, every special election, she is there and so are her volunteers.
But beyond Penderbrook, Valerie also volunteers for other SDDC and FCDC activities, such as completing and distributing door hangers, and being part of the team putting on FCDC's Precinct Ops Training Forum this coming summer. She truly defines what is means to be a crucial part of Springfield Democrats and works tirelessly to educate voters and help other volunteers.
Thank you, Valerie, for all you do for us and for the voters of Fairfax County!

A good time was had by all at our 22nd annual Blue BBQ May 21st. A huge thank you to all our members, volunteers, candidates and elected officials who attended.
CANDIDATE FORUM DRAWS CROWD
Nearly 100 people filled the Clifton Town Hall May 7th for SDDC's Candidate Forum, featuring candidates running for Virginia House and Senate seats, County Board of Supervisors, and Commonwealth's Attorney. Moderated by Barbara Levine from Democratic Women of Clifton and Northern Virginia, the forum was an opportunity for voters to pose questions beforehand and hear directly from candidates about their platforms. Local elections make a huge impact on our everyday lives, and SDDC strives to educate every voter on every race in the district.

SDDC Supports Proposed Police Reform Bills Including Comprehensive Justice in Policing Act of 2020
Recently we have all been witness to the unforgivable murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arvery. Their names added to a long and heartbreaking list of Africans-American men and women who have lost their lives and the hands of those who had sworn to “serve and protect.” We will not stand idly by and are compelled to action in the face of these atrocities. The Springfield District Democratic Committee (SDDC) demand investigations into the incidents both past and future, and prosecution of the offenders. We support exercise of our right to assemble as we gather to protest and call for justice and reform. We also support critical law enforcement reform legislation to help put an end to racist, violent, and unjust police activity. We need to ensure that all Americans, in particular African-Americans who have been systematically disenfranchised and have been denied the protection and rights enshrined in our Constitution. Meaningful change must happen, and it must happen now.
On Wednesday, June 17, the House Judiciary Committee will mark up the comprehensive police reform bill, Justice in Policing Act of 2020 (H.R. 7120). This bill, developed by the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional leadership aims to improve federal enforcement of constitutional violations such as the excessive use of force by state and local law enforcement. Among other provisions, this bill would ban chokeholds, limit the use of no knock warrants, and overhaul “qualified immunity,” a legal doctrine that protects police officers from lawsuits. It would also create a national registry—the National Police Misconduct Registry—to compile data on complaints and records of police misconduct. The Justice in Policing Act would also finally make lynching a federal crime. The measures in the bill intend to increase accountability for law enforcement misconduct, to enhance transparency and data collection, and to eliminate discriminatory policing practices.

The Justice in Policing Act of 2020 was introduced by Congressional Black Caucus Chair Karen Bass (D-CA), Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Kamala Harris (D-CA), and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) on June 8. There are now 220 co-sponsors of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, including Reps. Gerry Connolly (VA-11), Jennifer Wexton (VA-10), and Abigail Spanberger (VA-7). Springfield District Democratic Committee is in full support of this legislation. We in the Springfield District Democratic Committee demand action on policing reform. We insist that Congress support strict oversight of law enforcement misbehavior and investigations, that Congress should support community-led transparency and oversight efforts, and that Congress should promote the adoption of unbiased law enforcement policies at all levels of government. We realize that these steps are merely the beginning of a course correction on racist police practices in America. Systemic reform requires structural changes.

Helping our community
One of the unfortunate results of our pandemic stay-at-home order is an increase in domestic violence cases. With short notice, the Springfield Democrats were able to gather a great haul of donations to help victims of domestic violence during this pandemic. Thank you to all of the contributors of this effort. We are all in this together.

record-breaking road cleanup - Fall 2019!
We are so proud of Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn, HD 41, (a Springfield Democrat!) for being nominated to become Virginia's next Speaker of the House of Delegates! She will be the the first woman in Virginia's 400-year legislative history to fulfill this role, and we know her leadership will make Virginia stronger.
"We are a unified caucus with the shared priority to move our Commonwealth forward, address our most critical challenges, and ensure transparency for all Virginians. We are stepping up to lead and understand the value of making our schools better, our communities stronger, our economy fairer, and our Commonwealth the envy of all the states," Delegate Filler-Corn said in her official statement.
"We will continue to have a wide range of opinions as to the best path forward. I wouldn't want it any other way. We are not bound by an ideology that comes from me or any other Democratic leaders in our Commonwealth or our nation."
"Our work will not be easy but I am prepared and eager to serve the people of the great Commonwealth of Virginia alongside Majority Leader-elect Herring, Democratic Caucus Chair-elect Sullivan and all of our colleagues."

First of all, it is unbelievable that we flipped the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates BLUE!! What an amazing victory and proud day for Democrats! Now the majority in the General Assembly is in the hands of Democratic leaders, so we hope to see our representatives get straight to work and pass legislation that will benefit all in the Commonwealth.

SDDC Award Winners - Barbara & Ken!
We'd like to announce a very special congratulations to:
Barbara Miller - 2018 Springfield Democrats Volunteer of the Year
Barbara has been an FCDC member in the past, but for the last cycle, was a volunteer. Barbara volunteers every year at Clifton Precinct, at first as a poll worker, and then as a Precinct Captain. She has also staffed events such as Clifton Day. Barbara has re-joined FCDC this year and has already committed to serving in the Precinct Captain position, as well as volunteering at Voter Registration events. |
Ken Wheeler - 2018 Springfield Democrats Member of the Year
Ken was a new member of FCDC last year, joining in the “Trump Wave” in January. Ken jumped right in, and began to organize canvasses in the 42nd District. He noticed that FCDC showed a large number of Unidentified Voters in VAN, and organized canvasses solely dedicated to identifying and reaching out to Unidentified Voters during the Primary. His canvasses were so successful, the primary winner in the 42nd, Kathy Tran (now Delegate), asked Ken and his volunteers to continue running canvasses. His idea has spread FCDC wide. He is running canvasses himself in the Springfield District (10th CD) and assisted in getting the other districts who are in the 10th CD. He has also been instrumental in getting Loudoun County Dems to implement his plan as well. Before the reorganization, he recruited new members and encouraged past members to re-join. Ken has also helped staff his precinct on Primary and Election Day. |

There is a massive effort underway to canvass all of the 10th Congressional District, looking for new Democrats.
The goal is to add these newly identified Democrats to our data in VAN, which will allow them to receive mailings about candidates and elections, as well as to hopefully get them to the polls this November to oust Barbara Comstock. Working in partnership with several grassroots organizations, such as Swing Left, SDDC member Ken Wheeler has created schedules for each canvass. Approximately 80 volunteers are needed for each day, but each shift will be designed to be approximately 2 hours.
Come for a shift or spend the whole day, knocking on doors and meeting community members. The dates and locations for each canvass in the Springfield District are listed here. Let us know if you want to volunteer!
